Postvention and Suicide Prevention in the Workplace

Prevention and postvention are sometimes spoken about as separate areas of work. In reality, they are closely connected.

How an organisation responds after a suicide can influence not only those who are grieving, but the wider culture around mental health, help-seeking and psychological safety.

Good postvention is therefore an important part of a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention in the workplace.

Why Postvention is an Essential Part of Suicide Prevention

A compassionate, coordinated response after a suicide can reduce isolation, encourage help-seeking, strengthen psychological safety and support colleagues who may themselves be vulnerable following the death.

This understanding is reflected in BS 30480, the British Standard for Suicide Prevention in the Workplace, which recognises that postvention is an essential component of a comprehensive workplace suicide prevention strategy. Preparing to respond after a suicide is not about expecting tragedy… it's about creating a culture where people feel safer, better supported and more able to seek help when they need it.

Good workplace postvention can:

✓ Reduce isolation after a suicide

✓ Encourage people to seek help earlier

✓ Strengthen psychological safety

✓ Build confidence in managers

✓ Promote compassionate conversations about mental health

✓ Support a healthier workplace culture

What does this mean in practice?

Good workplace postvention is not simply about responding after a death. It is about creating the conditions for people to feel supported, informed and able to seek help when they need it.

Organisations can strengthen their response by preparing in advance, supporting managers, communicating sensitively, reducing isolation and making sure support remains available beyond the immediate aftermath.

A thoughtful postvention response cannot remove the impact of a suicide, but it can help shape what happens next.

Good postvention cannot change what has happened. It can influence what happens next.
